Steve Seskin brings music and bullying prevention message to Washington Discovery Academy

Washington Discovery Academy students received an important message about kindness, respect, and bullying prevention Thursday through the power of music.

Students welcomed Steve Seskin, co-writer of the song “Don’t Laugh at Me” and the author of seven #1 songs, for a special bullying prevention assembly. Through songs, stories, and conversation, Seskin encouraged students to think about how their words and actions affect others and the importance of treating everyone with consideration and respect.

Rather than simply talking about bullying prevention, Seskin used music as a way to connect with students and help them understand the importance of empathy, kindness, and standing up for one another.

“Music has a unique way of helping us connect with ideas and emotions,” said Principal Josh Overmyer. “Steve’s message gave our students an opportunity to think about the way they treat others and the role each of us can play in creating a school community where everyone feels respected and included.”

Seskin’s visit was made possible through Honeywell Arts in Education, which brings artists and arts experiences into schools to provide students with meaningful opportunities to learn and connect through the arts.

The assembly served as a reminder to students that bullying prevention is more than a single lesson or event. It is something that begins with everyday choices: choosing kindness, showing empathy, including others, and using our words to build people up.

Washington Discovery Academy thanks Honeywell Arts in Education for bringing Steve Seskin to the school and providing students with an engaging and memorable way to learn about an important message.
