Shelbyville intersections to receive handicap ramps, other improvements

Construction for Phase One will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Several Shelbyville street intersections are being improved with construction projects starting this week.

Street Commissioner Shane Peters announced the commencement of Project CCMG Spring 2024-1, a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at improving accessibility and road conditions across Shelbyville. Projects are to begin Wednesday.

The projects are funded by a Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

Phase One will focus on upgrading key intersections with essential enhancements:

– Elliott & Franklin: Installation of 24’ curb & gutter

– Mechanic & Noble: Sidewalk improvements

– Noble & Jackson: Installation of 4 handicap ramps

– Progress & McKay: Installation of 1 handicap ramp

– Pike & Mechanic: Installation of 2 handicap ramps

– Knightstown & Morris: Sidewalk removal and curb installation

– Maple & Washington: Installation of 2 handicap ramps

– Jackson & Pike: Installation of 2 handicap ramps

Construction for Phase One will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. During this period, the press release from the City of Shelbyville says no roads will be closed. Instead, intersections under construction will have flaggers directing traffic, supplemented by optional detour and alternative route signage to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Additionally, the contract company awarded the project will distribute schedule fliers to adjacent residents prior to commencing work. To facilitate construction, a 50-foot buffer alongside the project areas will be designated to prevent parking and potential vehicular damage.

Commissioner Peters emphasized, “This project marks a significant step forward in enhancing accessibility and infrastructure within our city. The improvements funded by the CCMG grant will benefit our community for years to come.”

Phase Two of Project CCMG (Spring 2024-2) will follow Phase One, beginning Spring 2025. This will continue the installation of handicap ramps on city intersections and include milling and paving additional roads in Shelbyville. Detailed updates and progress reports will be shared with the public throughout the project’s duration.
