Shelbyville Common Council approves Animal Shelter Interlocal Agreement

The City of Shelbyville and Shelby County officials have worked together to streamline the bill paying process for the Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter.

Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson presented the Animal Shelter Interlocal Agreement to the Shelbyville Common Council Monday, and it was unanimously approved.

The agreement is expected to be approved tonight by the Shelby County Council.

Rather than haggling over monthly expenses, the new agreement calls for the county to pay $504,500 to the city in 2025 to cover its share of operating expenses. The cost will be broken into two payments of $252,250.

The total was determined by averaging the expenses of the last three years and adding 5% interest, according to City of Shelbyville Clerk-Treasurer Scott Asher.

In other common council business Monday, PK USA was granted a 10-year tax abatement on just over $15 million in new manufacturing, logistical and information technology equipment.

Furgeson announced that City of Shelbyville Attorney Jennifer Meltzer will no longer be a city employee in 2025. She is moving into private practice with the local law firm McNeely Law LLP.

Meltzer will continue her role as the city’s attorney, said Furgeson.
