A decorated firefighter and emergency medical technician with three decades of service is hanging up his gear, and the Plymouth Fire Department is already preparing to fill the void he leaves behind.
Plymouth Fire Chief Steve Holm told the Board of Public Works and Safety Monday evening that the department is opening the application process for a full-time firefighter position following the retirement of Lieutenant Heath Neidig, effective this Friday, June 12.
Neidig has given 27.5 years to the Plymouth Fire Department, including 22 years as a career firefighter and EMT. In total, he brings 30 years of firefighting experience to the close of his career — a run that has earned him deep respect within the department and the broader Plymouth community.
Outside the firehouse, Neidig is a family man and serves as a master trainer at the specialized O.P.D. K-9 academy, a role that reflects the breadth of his commitment to public safety beyond his day-to-day duties with the PFD.
The public is invited to stop by the Plymouth Fire Station this Friday to wish Lieutenant Neidig well as he moves into the next chapter of his life. Neidig will be on hand to receive well-wishers, and light refreshments will be served.
Chief Holm, the department, and the city administration extended their gratitude to Neidig for his decades of dedication.
