An organization being formed to help and assist Lawrence County (Illinois) veterans and their families held its initial meeting Thursday, May 28th at the Lawrenceville American Legion Post #2244.
The Lawrence County Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) elected its officers for 2026. Gerald Weidner was selected as President, Jordan Stephens as Vice-President, Brandon Bland as Secretary/Treasurer and Kyle Turner as Chaplin with a Sergeant-at-Arms to be elected later.
Former Lawrenceville city councilman and local veteran Wendell Stevens was appointed by the group as it's liaison with the Lawrence County Board, through which the Commission will work.
Next up for the VAC is the formulation of a fiscal year 2026-27 operating budget. Representatives are scheduled to meet with the Lawrence County Board Finance Committee on Thursday, June 4th as part of that process.
The next Lawrence County VAC meeting is set for Wednesday, July 1st at 6 p.m. at the VFW Post located on North 12th Street in Lawrenceville and is open to the public. Anyone interested is invited to attend.
