Indiana’s unemployment rate in January stands at 3.1%, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. By comparison, the national unemployment rate for January stands at 3.4%.
In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate held at 63.4% for January, remaining above the national rate of 62.4%. Indiana’s total labor force, which includes both Hoosiers employed and those seeking employment, stands at 3,409,096 - a decrease of 973 from the previous month.
Marshall County is ranked 18th of the 92 counties in Indiana for January 2023 with an unemployment rate of 3.9%. Last month the December unemployment rate was 2.6% and the county was ranked 23rd while in November the rate was 2.9% ranking us 28th.
Looking over the last few years, Marshall County’s unemployment rates have been all over the place. Last year in 2020 the rate was 1.9% ranking the county 67th. In 2021 Marshall County was ranked 56th with an unemployment rate of 3.8%. The previous year in 2020 the rate was 3.6% with a ranking of 49 and in 2019 we were 43rd with a rate of 4.2%. Rounding out the last 5 years, Marshall County was ranked 62nd in 2018 with a rate of 3.3%.
Looking at the counties surrounding Marshall County you will find Starke County 3rd on the list of counties with an unemployment rate of 5.0% immediately followed by Elkhart County with a rate of 4.9%. LaPorte County is 8th on the list with a rate of 4.4% and Kosciusko County moved up to 12th with an unemployment rate of 4.2%. Fulton County falls 16th on the list of counties with a rate of 3.9% while Marshall is ranked 18th with that same 3.9% rate and Saint Joseph County ends up 19th on the list with a 3.9% rate. That means Marshall County and the immediately surrounding counties are all on the top end of the unemployment list with the best showing being St. Joseph County at 19th.
Private sector employment in Indiana increased by 12,600 jobs over the last month, translating to a gain of 85,300 jobs from this time last year. Indiana's January private employment stands at 2,825,700. Industries that experienced job increases in January included:
Construction (+6,700); Leisure and Hospitality (+4,700); Private Educational and Health Services (+2,500); Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+1,500); and Professional and Business Services (+300).As of March 1, 2023, there were 130,839 open job postings throughout the state. In January, 19,460 unemployment insurance claims were filed in Indiana.
