Greenfield PD continues to be hampered by scammers claiming to be officers

Over the last two days, the Greenfield Police Department has received a handful of complaints from residents about receiving calls from officers of the department attempting to obtain personal information.

The caller ID that shows up on the victim’s phone is “City of Greenfield”, but it is not the City of Greenfield calling.

One person filed a complaint that Deputy Chief McMichael called them questioning a suspicious purchase and demanded information. The scammer attempted to obtain information related to their bank account, attempting to steal money from their account.

Another scammer called a resident and claimed to be Officer Decker. This person was told they had unpaid citations and demanded to be paid over the phone. “Officer Decker” sounded very serious and official on the phone and after being told they were being tracked, the victim gave them money.

The Greenfield Police Department advises that you cannot avoid going to jail by paying money over the phone. You cannot pay unpaid citations over the phone. No police pfficer will ever call and demand to be paid over the phone in any way. If you receive a phone call like this, hang up! Don’t provide any information.

If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer from the Greenfield Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, McCordsville Police Department, Fortville Police Department, Shirley Police Department, Wilkinson Police Department, New Palestine Police Department or the Cumberland Police Department and you don’t believe them, hang up and call the Hancock County 911 Center, our dispatch agency, at 317-477-4400 and ask the dispatcher if the officer is working and attempting to call you. They will have the information to verify the officer is who they say they are and are or are not trying to call you.
