The Indiana State Police were requested to investigate a fatal crash that occurred in Kokomo.
Just before 2:45 a.m. on Friday, the Kokomo Police Department contacted the Indiana State Police Critical Incident Reconstruction Team to conduct an investigation into a single vehicle crash on West Superior Street near Washington Street.
Shortly after 2:30 a.m., Howard County Dispatch received an alert from a crash detection system indicating that a Toyota had crashed in the area of West Superior Street and Washington Street. Dispatch notified units in the vicinity, who located a 2022 Toyota that had struck a utility pole and rolled.
When Kokomo Police Department officers arrived, they recognized the vehicle as the same one that had fled from an officer just moments earlier. Emergency medical personnel were requested immediately. The Howard County Coroner’s Office was also notified and, upon arrival, confirmed the driver was deceased. The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Any inquiries regarding the identity of the deceased should be directed to the Howard County Coroner’s Office.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the Toyota left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and rolled. Speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash.
At this time, the crash remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police Critical Incident Reconstruction Team. Any additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The Indiana State Police were assisted by the Kokomo Police Department, Kokomo Fire Department, Howard County Coroner and local EMS.
