Lafayette Jeff put four on the board in the bottom of the first and matched that with another four runs in the fourth to beat visiting Rochester 9-5 in the Zebras baseball opener.
Rochester (0-1) jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead only to see the Bronchos answer with four in their first at-bat. Rochester's offensive highlight came n the top of the fourth with Lafayette Jeff leading 5-4. Shortstop Brady Coleman cleared the bases with a triple to bring the Zebras to within a run, 5-4. But again the Bronchos had an immediate answer with four runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Brant Beck started and took the loss for the Zebras. He pitched two innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits.
The Rochester defense had three errors on the day.
Carson Paulik and Mitchell Clark each had a run driven in for Rochester.
Rochester will be closer to home on Friday as the Zebras go to Caston for the Comets season opener.
