Jockey Evin Roman piloted Filly Named Bruzz to victory in the fifth race Wednesday at Horseshoe Indianapolis. The win was special for Roman as it was his 1,000th career victory.
Roman began his career in his native Puerto Rico and won two races there before relocating to the United States in 2017. His first success was recorded in California where he tied for the leading jockey title with Flavian Prat that season at Santa Anita at the age of 19.
From there, he went on to earn the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. He continued to secure several more leading rider titles in California before venturing to Indiana in 2024. Since his arrival in the Hoosier State, he has been among the top 10 in the standings both seasons.
Roman came into the day one win away from the milestone. It was his second start of the day aboard the Ethan West trained three-year-old Filly Named Bruzz, who was making her first career start in the six-furlong maiden race.

“I really like the filly a lot and I have been working her in the mornings,” noted Roman. “I thought she had a big shot to win today. She broke really sharp and at the quarter pole, I knew she was going to win.”
Filly Named Bruzz made it a decisive finish, winning by 10 and one-half lengths for Roman. She is a homebred Indiana sired daughter of Shagaf for Doris Book, Andrew Harris, and Frank Brown, who is also the breeder.
“I feel so happy to win 1,000 races,” added Roman. “It is very hard to win that. I’m very happy my family is here. I want to thank my agent, the owners, and the trainers along with all the other people who have helped me in my career. I am so happy to get this milestone.”
Roman was joined in the winner’s circle by Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing, Trainer Ethan West, Rachel McLaughlin, Racing Broadcast Production Manager, and Tim DeWitt, Racing Operations Manager, for the winner’s circle presentation. The presentation was made to Roman and his family. It was the third win of the meet for Roman, who is once again is among the top 10 jockeys this season.
The 24th season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse extends through Friday, November 13. For more information on racing at Horseshoe Indianapolis, visit www.caesars.com/horseshoe-indianapolis/racing or find details on social media @HSIndyRacing.
