Olney (Richland County) quarterback Gavyn Cothren was a one-man wrecking crew Friday night as he led the Tigers to a 57-14 win over the host Lawrenceville Indians at Ed Loeb Field.
The 6-foot 170-pound senior was 10-of-17 passing for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran 14 times for 228 yards and 3 more touchdowns as the unbeaten Tigers ran their record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Little Illini Conference (LIC) play.
The game was tied 7-7 after one quarter and Olney led 22-14 at the half before the visitors dominated play in the second half. They outscored the Indians 28-0 in the third quarter to lead 50-14 and added a final score in the fourth quarter enroute to the victory.
The Indians were led by starting quarterback Isaac Vennard, who was 6-of-11 passing for 165 yard and two touchdowns - a 93-yarder to Zander Cessna and a 60-yard bomb to Jacek Mickiewicz in the first half, but the Indians could not mount any offense in the second half.
Olney racked up 492 yards in total offense to only 265 for the Tribe.
The Indians fall to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in LIC play. They will hit the road to Paris on Friday, September 19 for another conference contest.
