WWII artillery rounds found at Plymouth home during contractor cleanup; all items confirmed inert

Plymouth residents near West Lake Avenue were asked to avoid the area Tuesday morning after World War II-era artillery rounds were discovered at a home being cleaned out by a contractor. Authorities confirmed there was no threat to the public.

Plymouth Police Chief Weir told GIANT fm WTCA that second shift officers were called to 1537 West Lake Avenue on Monday evening after a contractor working on the property discovered the items. The home is located across from Washington Discovery Academy.

The contractor was cleaning out the property, which was purchased at a tax sale, when he came across what appeared to be early 1900s artillery rounds. Law enforcement was notified as a precautionary measure.

Plymouth Police contacted the South Bend Bomb Squad, which in turn contacted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit. EOD responded Tuesday morning to assess the situation. Upon examination, all of the artillery rounds were determined to be inert — though that was not immediately clear when they were first discovered.

All items have since been removed from the home. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including police, fire, and bomb squad personnel.

According to Marshall County GIS records, the property is owned by NWI RE5 LLC out of LaPorte. The home sold at tax sale in October 2024, with a tax deed issued on March 12, 2026, for $47,553.
