U.S. Rep. Yakym introduces bipartisan resolution celebrating National Home Visiting Week

This week, Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02), a member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Work and Welfare, introduced a resolution to designate the week of April 20–24, 2026, as National Home Visiting Week. This resolution highlights the important role the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) programs have in support of childhood development, strengthening family relationships, and reducing the risk of child abuse and neglect.

Rep. Yakym was joined by House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Work and Welfare Chairman Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL-16), along with Reps. Judy Chu (D-CA-28) and Danny K. Davis (D-IL-07).

"I'm honored to once again cosponsor the Home Visiting Resolution, which recognizes the critical role these programs play in supporting new mothers and giving our youngest children the strongest possible start in life," Rep. Yakym said. "My predecessor and dear friend, Jackie Walorski, was a tireless champion of the Maternal, Infant, Early Childhood Home Visiting Program, and her leadership in securing its reauthorization continues to pay dividends for families across the country. Jackie always reminded us that 'case managers are first responders,' and this resolution is a fitting tribute to their dedication and the real difference they make in communities like ours every single day."

“It's been proven that home visiting services for pregnant women and families with young children result in improved outcomes for children’s health, well-being, readiness for school, and success for life,” Rep. Chu said. “In 2022 I was proud to partner with my colleagues to reauthorize and expand investments in the federal Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program. And I am happy to join my colleagues once again in introducing this bipartisan resolution recognizing National Home Visiting Week and the importance of home visiting to family and child success.”

Yakym, Chair LaHood, and Rep. Chu in leading this resolution to celebrate home visiting.” 

Hoosier Home Visitors play a critical role in our communities and the families they serve. A program director and two Nurse Home Visitors from Indiana's Second District shared what this work means to them.

“Every family deserves someone who believes in them,” Tanya Machek, Director of Healthy Families Elkhart and Marshall Counties said. “CAPS’ Healthy Families program provides that support through home visiting—helping parents build confidence, strengthen relationships, and create safe, loving environments where children can learn, grow, and thrive. When families are supported, entire communities flourish. Over the years, we have seen so many families achieve small steps and goals to help their family flourish. We have seen a young mother facing housing insecurity and substance use move into a safe home and overcome addiction, flourishing personally and in her parenting journey. A core value of CAPS is being committed to relationships because we know we are stronger together. Because of the support this young mom received from a home visitor, she didn’t have to take this journey alone and it made all the difference.”

“Working as a Nurse Home Visitor with Goodwill’s Nurse Family Partnership has been the most meaningful experience of my career,” Logan Francis, RN, BSN, CLS, Nurse Home Visitor said. “For over three years, I’ve had the privilege of serving families in St. Joseph County, building real relationships and walking alongside parents during some of the most important moments of their lives. Every day, I get to connect with members of our community who deserve support, encouragement, and someone in their corner. Being that person for them, seeing their strength, their growth, and their resilience, has been incredibly rewarding. I feel grateful every day to do this work.”

“Working with Nurse-Family Partnership has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career,” Sarah Braganza, RN, BSN, Nurse Home Visitor said. “I joined NFP three years ago after completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Although I began my career in pre- and post-operative care, I quickly realized my true passion was supporting mothers and babies. Since joining NFP, I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love walking alongside each parent, providing education, resources, and support. My favorite part is witnessing their growth—seeing families overcome barriers, discover their inner strength, and become empowered. This is what inspires me every day. It’s an honor to be invited into their lives and to be part of their journey.”
