A routine traffic stop in the early morning hours on Friday led to the arrest of two individuals on multiple drug-related charges after a sheriff's department K9 detected narcotics in their vehicle.
Kyle Lisac, 39, of Shield Street in Knox, and Rachel Berdine, 48, of E 850 S in Monterey, were taken into custody following the stop near the intersection of 7th and King Roads at approximately 1:20 a.m. on February 21.
Deputy Blake Bennett of the Marshall County Sheriff's Department conducted the initial traffic stop with Lisac, who was driving the vehicle, and Berdine, who was a passenger.
During the stop, K9 Diesel performed an open-air sniff around the vehicle and alerted deputies to the presence of narcotic odors coming from inside.
Deputies then conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle, which resulted in the discovery of multiple firearms, suspected fentanyl, suspected methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia, according to the arrest report.
Both Lisac and Berdine were transported to the Marshall County Jail and booked on identical charges:
- Possession of Methamphetamine, More than 28 Grams – Level 3 Felony
- Possession of Cocaine or a Narcotic Drug, Less than 5 Grams with an Enhancing Circumstance – Level 5 Felony
- Possession of Paraphernalia – Class C Misdemeanor
Each was issued a $40,000 bond.
Level 3 felonies in Indiana carry potential sentences of three to sixteen years in prison, while Level 5 felonies carry potential sentences of one to six years.
Both suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The charges filed are accusations, and a conviction has not been obtained.
