Thousands of students participate in Governor Braun’s Inaugural Indiana School Fitness Month

As September comes to a close, Governor Mike Braun is highlighting the success of the inaugural School Fitness Month—one way Indiana is prioritizing health and wellness as part of the Make Indiana Healthy Again initiative. Through the commitment of local schools and educators, thousands of Hoosier students participated in School Fitness Month by incorporating more physical activity and health awareness in their everyday routines both in the classroom and at home.

“From all parts of the state, thousands of students and educators made a commitment to Make Indiana Healthy Again this School Fitness Month,” said Gov. Braun. “Their effort reminds us that when we work together to support healthier schools, we’re investing in the long-term success of every Hoosier student.” 

Indiana’s inaugural School Fitness Month was developed to promote regular physical activity, which supports students’ overall health, boosts confidence, and improves focus. The initiative encouraged students to engage in physical activity, including walking, exploring a new park, or biking one of Indiana’s many trails.

To support and encourage participation in School Fitness Month during the month of September, Gov. Braun also launched the newly developed Governor’s Fitness Test. Southmont Schools in Montgomery County led the state, with more than 300 students participating.

Through the Governor’s Fitness Test, Gov. Braun aims to prevent childhood obesity and inspire a healthy lifestyle that allows all students to reach their full potential. Physical education teachers were encouraged to develop both goals and time expectations that are appropriate for each age group. Schools also had the flexibility to develop student-level goals based on each student’s unique needs and abilities.

Schools that implemented the Governor’s Fitness Test will receive a Certificate of Excellence from Gov. Braun for both their school and the students who excelled the most.
