The Indiana Department of Environmental Management issued a swim-related alert for the Indiana Dunes State Park east beach on Wednesday afternoon.
Local beach managers issued a swim alert due to high bacterial levels. The bacteria levels that are too high and concerning are E. coli.
High levels of E. coli bacteria can cause illness, so the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) monitors water quality and issues advisories or closures when necessary.
