Sumner City Administrator Travis Trainer says that the city has been awarded a $50,000 grant through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).

The funding will provide for the expansion of its water system and services to provide safe, potable drinking water to both residents and businesses located north of the city. In addition, the project will help support any future annexation efforts and help position Sumner of potential industrial growth and economic development opportunities in the future.

Trainer also reports that the city has been given the go-ahead from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to proceed with pre-construction engineering for the Christy Avenue improvement project. It is hoped that a spring bid letting will occur and the project can get underway and completed as soon as possible. That project is also grant-funded for $450,000 from IDOT with no match required by the city.
