Shelbyville trails join region-wide TrailMixer Festival celebrating Central Indiana connectivity

The City of Shelbyville has announced its trail system has joined communities across Central Indiana in the inaugural TrailMixer Festival, a weeklong celebration of outdoor recreation, connectivity and community.

Running April 25 through May 3, the TrailMixer Festival marks the launch of the Greater Indy Trailways network – an ambitious effort to unify more than 800 miles of trails and greenways across nine counties, including Shelby County.

Shelbyville’s participation positions its growing trail system as a key piece of that regional network – connecting residents and visitors to safe, accessible routes for walking, biking, and outdoor activity.

“This isn’t just about trails – it’s about access, quality of life, and putting Shelbyville on the map as part of a connected Central Indiana,” said Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson (photo) in a media release. “We’re no longer operating in a silo. Our trails are part of something bigger.”

The TrailMixer Festival brings more than 50 events to communities across the regional, including guided rides, trail cleanups, wellness activities, and local business partnerships offering promotions and experiences along trail corridors. Most events are free and designed to be accessible for all ages and skill levels.

For Shelbyville, the moment underscores ongoing investment in trail infrastructure and recreation as a driver of economic development and community health. Regional leaders point to growing demand for outdoor amenities as a factor influencing where people choose to live, work, and visit.

Participation in TrailMixer reinforces Shelbyville’s role in the equation – offering residents direct access to a broader network that extends well beyond city limits.

What this means for Shelbyville:

  • Integration into a regional 800-mile trail system
  • Increased visibility as a destination for outdoor recreation
  • Expanded opportunities for tourism and local business engagement
  • Continued momentum for future trail development and connectivity

The TrailMixer Festival also coincides with National Celebrate Trails Day, amplifying the importance of trails as community assets and economic drivers.
