The Plymouth Police Department reported a pair of arrests stemming from separate traffic stops conducted just 40 minutes apart on Wednesday evening, April 1st.
The first incident occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m. when a Plymouth police officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle showing a suspended registration. The driver pulled over in the parking lot of Little Caesars Pizza on North Michigan Street.
The driver and registered owner of the vehicle was identified as 38-year-old Melina Barber of Elkhart. Barber was taken into custody, transported to the Marshall County Jail, and booked on a charge of driving while suspended with a prior conviction.
Shortly after, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Corporal Schieber conducted a separate traffic stop on U.S. 30 near Oak Drive. The officer pulled over a vehicle that was reportedly traveling in excess of 80 mph in a posted 50 mph zone.
During the stop, the driver was identified as 25-year-old Brianna Westcott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. According to police, Westcott exhibited signs of impairment, and officers located various THC products inside the vehicle.
Westcott was arrested and lodged at the Marshall County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) - endangerment, OWI on a controlled substance, reckless driving, and possession of marijuana.
Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
