Marshall County issues Travel Advisory due to lake effect snow

The Marshall County Emergency Management Agency has placed Marshall County under a Travel Advisory effective immediately as a winter storm brings heavy lake effect snow to the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Marshall County until 1:00 p.m. Thursday.

A lake effect snow event is forecast to bring up to 8 inches of snow to parts of Marshall County, with locally higher amounts possible in some areas.

Northern communities like LaPaz and Bremen may receive significantly more snow than southern towns like Argos and Culver, causing travel conditions to vary widely across the county.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph will cause whiteout conditions at times and lead to significant snow drifting.

A Travel Advisory is the lowest level of local travel restrictions. It means routine travel or activities may be restricted in certain areas because of hazardous situations, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas.

Travel advisories are indicated by yellow on statewide travel status maps.

Expect hazardous travel conditions through at least Thursday evening. The Marshall County Highway Department and INDOT will both be working to clear roads throughout the storm.

Marshall County officials will continually assess road conditions and determine if a travel status upgrade or downgrade is warranted.

EMA Director Jack Garner is urging residents to avoid traveling if at all possible to allow road crews safe operating conditions.

"Staying home will also help our public safety officials more efficiently respond to emergencies," Garner said.

Residents should monitor local media and the Marshall County EMA for updates, including an eventual return to normal travel status.
