The Lawrence County Board Wednesday approved a resolution creating a part-time, salaried public defender position.
The conflict public defender is appointed to the defense of people charged with crimes who do not have the financial means to obtain legal counsel. The county currently pays an hourly rate to the public defender for his work with his clients. Under the resolution, the salary would be $30,000 per year and be paid for through funds available through the Second Judicial Circuit, saving the county money overall. The move was made with the recommendation of States Attorney Brady Waldrop.
The board, upon committee recommendation, named Todd Tiffany to the Lawrence-Allison Fire Protection District Board of Trustees. He will fill out the unexpired term of Bill Powell, who resigned. That term will end in 2026.
