Law enforcement warns against getting involved in social media challenge

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning against a social media trend encouraging young people to kick or slam on the front doors of random homes in the middle of the night that is making its way through communities.

The sheriff's office stated that while some may see it as a prank, it is anything but harmless as the behavior can:
• Cause costly damage to homes and property.
• Frighten families who are awakened by loud banging at their door.
• Trigger emergency calls and unnecessary responses from law enforcement.
• Create extremely dangerous situations, as homeowners may believe someone is attempting to break into their home.

The sheriff's office wants to encourage all parents and guardians to speak with their children about the dangers and consequences of participating in social media "challenges" or trends like this. A viral video or a few laughs simply are not worth risking someone's safety—or ending up with criminal charges.

If you witness suspicious activity or your home is targeted, please report it to your local law enforcement agency immediately. If it is an emergency or you believe someone is attempting to enter your home, call 911.
