A fire at the Shelby County Transfer Station was caused by improperly disposed batteries.
There were no injuries in the incident. No dollar amount on any damage has been released.
The Shelby County Recycling District posted the following on its Facebook page following the incident -
BATTERIES SHOULD NEVER BE DISPOSED OF IN TRASH OR RECYCLE CONTAINERS! Due to someone’s careless action, a battery ignited a fire at the Shelby County Transfer Station. This act could have caused serious bodily injury or worse, death to our team members.
For proper and safe disposal, all batteries are accepted at the Shelby County Recycle Center free of charge.
