Hug Engineering planning fireworks show for grand opening celebration July 16

Hug Engineering’s official arrival in Shelbyville will be celebrated with a fireworks show.

A company representative appeared before the Shelbyville Board of Public Works and Safety Monday afternoon requesting permission for a 15–20-minute fireworks show on July 16 that will conclude its grand opening celebration at 1703 McCall Drive (photo).

The company has invested $1.8 million into the structure that formerly housed Enbi Indiana and $700,000 into the property to prepare for its opening.

The Shelbyville facility will have 35 employees with a total of $2.7 million in salaries.

“We appreciate Hug being a part of our community. They took over the old Enbi building. That building didn’t sit empty for long,” said Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson, who is one of three sitting members of the Board of Works. “I think they are a valuable asset for the community. The wages will be good … 35 jobs … perfect for what we are looking for which is raising our median income.”

The grand opening and fireworks celebration will be open to the public.

In other board business, the board approved an Interlocal Agreement with Major Health Partners (MHP) that will help pay for ambulance service in Shelby County.

MHP has agreed to pay $200,000 per year for the next three years to be split equally between Shelby County and the City of Shelbyville to assist with ambulance service operational costs.

The board also approved a development agreement with Vantrust Real Estate who will develop four parcels of land along Mausoleum Road for a cold storage warehouse.

The Shelbyville Plan Commission approved the site development plan in July of 2025 but “Project Bobcat”, as it is referred to, had not yet had a second reading in front of the Shelbyville Common Council, which occurred Monday night to put the fiscal plan for development of Mausoleum Road in place.

From the July 2025 Plan Commission meeting, “Project Bobcat” would be developed for Anderson-Dubose Company to operate a 183,000-plus square foot warehouse facility in Shelbyville’s Industrial Park.

The site development plan also included a potential 50,000-square-foot expansion for a proposed warehouse. The site also will have railroad access.

Anderson-Dubose Company supplies restaurants.

The facility is expected to add approximately 100 jobs to the community.
