With extreme cold across the region, state and local fire officials are warning Lawrence County and other residents to use extra caution when heating.
Frigid temperatures often lead people to rely more heavily on heating systems and alternative heat sources, which can increase the risk of home fires and carbon monoxide poisoning if proper safety precautions are not followed. Those emergencies are preventable with a few simple steps such as installing working smoke and CO alarms which save lives.
Home heating equipment is the leading cause of residential fires during the winter months, according to the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office.
