The Hancock County Jail has received multiple calls from the public reporting a a scam.
The scam involves a person calling family members of current inmates at the Hancock County Jail. The person is claiming to be a sergeant with the sheriff's department but does not give a name. The person then tells them victim to pay $900.00 through Zelle or Venmo in order to get their loved one released from the jail and placed on home detention due to jail overcrowding.
The Hancock County Sheriff's Department social media post notes that it will never call demanding money. If you received a call like this, or have any information about this scam, please call Hancock County Sheriff's Department Investigation's Division at 317-477-1199.
Do not send the caller any money.
