The Lawrence County Board Wednesday voted to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the city of Sumner regarding making proposed improvements to Christy Avenue in Sumner.
Under the agreement, the county will handle the preliminary and contract engineering and create a construction plan for the project. Bids are expected to be advertised early in 2026.
The city had received a $450,000 Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) grant earlier this year for the project but needed to have the county involved according to IDOT protocols. Once the project is completed, the city will be responsible for maintenance of the road. County Engineer Aaron Mefford told GIANT-FM News that the county 's involvement in the work will help lessen the overall costs.
