The Shelbyville Common Council took the first step toward raising wastewater and stormwater rates to create the necessary funding for needed upgrades to the system.
Public hearings were held at Monday’s council meeting at City Hall.
Rates have not been raised in 14 years, according to Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson. The current rates are not providing sufficient revenue to meet the operational and maintenance needs of the facility.
The average rate increase per household will be $7 per month and will fluctuate based on water usage. If approved, it will take effect in August of 2026.
The first readings of both ordinances were unanimously approved.
The ordinances also must be approved by the Board of Works, which happened Tuesday morning at its weekly meeting.
A second reading will occur at the common council’s first meeting in June.
