After not having extended hours this spring for property tax collections, newly caucused County Treasurer Wendy Tapia asked the County Commissioners for permission to offer additional hours to pay the fall installment of property taxes.
The treasurer asked the commissioners to be open on Saturday, November 1st, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and stay open a couple of hours later on Thursday, November 6th, and Monday, November 10th. On Thursday and Monday, the treasurer’s office would be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tapia said taxpayers have asked her for the extended hours because many people work from 8 to 5 and can’t get into the office and pay in person without the extra hours.
When asked if she had money in the overtime line item to cover the additional expense, Tapia told the commissioners that most of her staff are new and don’t have much time off. She said they would prefer to use comp time instead of getting paid the extra money.
The county commissioners unanimously approved the extended hours for this fall's installment of property taxes. The deadline to have taxes paid on time is Monday, November 10th, by the close of business, which will be 6 p.m.
