The Sumner City Council has taken action regarding the emergency demolition of an old building which was destroyed by fire in May of 2026.

They moved to approve the cost of the emergency demolition and the projected cleanup and disposal of the Marion May building property by Munson Construction based in Oblong, Illinois.

Firefighters from multiple area fire departments were called out in the early morning hours to battle the fire at the structure located in the 100 block of Christy Street. The investigation continues into the cause.

City Administrator Travis Trainer told GIANT-FM News that the owner of the property has filed to quick claim the property over to the city, but no decision will be made by the council until they consult with city attorney Derek McCullough about potential litigation to recoup some of the cleanup costs from him.  It is hoped that a resolution will take place in the matter within 90 days. The city is looking to eventually take over the property and turn it into a public recreation and relaxation area.
