A deputy with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and an officer from the Bourbon Police Department performed a traffic stop on U.S. 30 near State Road 331 Saturday, April 26th, at about 8:25 p.m. after witnessing a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.
During the traffic stop, it was discovered that the driver, Leonel Alejandro Bermudez-Contreras, 28, of Chicago, did not have a valid driver's license. At 9:37 p.m., he was transported to the Marshall County Jail and booked for reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license. His cash bond was paid at midnight, and he was released on bond.
Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
