The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors has officially ushered in the 35-second shot clock for boys' and girls' basketball for the 26-27 season.

They met in Bloomington this week and voted to accept the recommendation of its Basketball Advisory Committee to implement the clock for both girls and boys varsity basketball in accordance with National Federation of High School (NFHS) rules. A school may not host a varsity contest if a shot clock is not installed or is not properly mounted on the backboards in the primary gym. Failure to do so could result in a forfeit by the host team.

The shot clock is optional for lower-level games.

The IHSA in June of 2024 moved to use a 35 second shot clock for all varsity games beginning in 2026-27 after experimental use of the clock in 2022-23 and 2023-24 in tournaments and shootouts. Illinois now joins 29 other states that use the shot clock. A survey of girls and boys head basketball coaches across the state in 2020 found 75% of the boys and 68% of the girls coaches favored and supported implementation of a shot clock.
