Elizabeth C. “Betty” Spurlock, 98, of Mentone, passed at 9:58 am, Sunday, March 15, 2026 at Paddock Springs of Warsaw, Indiana.
Betty was born on March 21, 1927 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late C.W. Clara (MaGee) Halstedt. She married on Oct. 10, 1943 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Vernon R. Spurlock Sr., who preceded her in death on December 15, 2016.
After moving to Warsaw in the 50’s, Betty spent many years in the retail business selling shoes. Betty was a past president of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She also sang in the Legion Choir when they won the State Championship in 1964.
Betty loved family and church. They moved to San Antonio, Texas, they were very active in church, she especially loved Bible study groups. Her famous apple cake was always requested. More recently, she was a member of the First Christian Church of Warsaw.
She loved league bowling, collecting elephants, and ceramics. Her beautiful nativity set, she painted by hand, was on display at Paddock Springs, where she had resided. The staff and residents loved seeing it every year. The staff at Paddock Springs lovingly called her Peanut, Grandma, and Betty Boop - her favorite cartoon character from her childhood.
She is survived by her daughter Kris Pletcher of Etna Green, Ind.; son Vernon “Mike” Spurlock Jr. and spouse Linda of San Antonio, Texas; 13 Grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vernon, daughter Robin Spurlock Briggs, and son William and wife Rosemary Spurlock, brother William and wife Stella Halstedt, son-in-law Chuck Pletcher, grandson Dennis Pletcher, and great grandson Johnny Yungandreas.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Friday, March 27, 2026 at King Memorial Home 101 North Tucker Street Mentone, Indiana with Neal Frantz officiating.
The interment will be in the Mentone Cemetery, Mentone, Indiana next to her husband.
Memorial visitation will be held from 2 pm to 3 pm, Friday, March 27, 2026 at King Memorial Home, Mentone. Indiana.
