Three injured after wrong way crash on US 24

A wrong way crash on US 24 in Cass County left three people injured early Wednesday morning. 

According to reports, the incident happened on Wednesday, August 5, just before 5:30 a.m, when Cass County Central Dispatch received a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment on US 24 east of Logansport Road.

Preliminary investigation by Deputy Joe Gentile stated that Rose Stambaugh, 57, of Peru, IN, had been driving a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the wrong direction eastbound in the westbound lane on US 24. The jeep eventually collided with a 2017 Dodge Ram Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Matthew Kiefer, 51, of Peru, causing the Dodge Ram to rolled over and was agains struck by a 2013 Dodge Dart driven by Zachary Ault, 35, of Peru. 

Stambaugh and Kiefer sustained serious injuries in the crash and both were flown to a trauma center in Fort Wayne by medical helicopters. Kiefer was extricated by firefighters from the Dodge Ram. Ault sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Parkview Logansport.

The westbound lanes of US 24 between US 31 and Logansport Road were closed for approximately three hours to cleanup the crash. 

Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Logansport Police Department, Indiana State Police, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, New Waverly Fire Department, Cass County Emergency Management, Indiana Department of Transportation and Cass County Emergency Medical Services responded to the accident. 

The investigation is ongoing, and alcohol is not considered to be a factor in this crash. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 574-753-7800.
