Lawrence County farmers and others across the state of Illinois are being reminded that this is "Grain Bin Safety Week".
The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) is encouraging all farmers to review their safety practices while working in and around grain bins. Farmers can often become complacent when doing tasks around the farm they have done a thousand times without incident. However, problems involving flowing grain can snowball quickly, so farmers and farmhands must be prepared for an emergency.
Due to the rural nature of many farm facilities, response times for emergency personnel to reach a location are increased, so it is vitally important that safety measures be reviewed frequently and no unnecessary risks taken which can lead to tragedy.
