Special Olympics of Marshall & Starke Counties will host its second annual Jingle Jam Basketball Tournament on Saturday, February 8th, at Culver Middle/High School. The daylong event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will feature Special Olympics Indiana teams from eight area counties, including two teams from Marshall & Starke Counties.
Approximately 29 teams will compete throughout the day in various formats, including 5-on-5 full-court games. 3-on-3 half-court games, individual skills competitions, and an all-female team competition featuring five teams.
Opening ceremonies will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Culver High School gymnasium.
Athletes will receive awards following their second game, with finishers placing first through eighth recognized. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded based on placement. In addition, referees will select one athlete from each game who demonstrates exemplary sportsmanship to receive a special Sportsmanship Award.
The tournament provides athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to train, compete, and showcase their abilities in an authentic and inclusive sporting environment. Participation also helps teams meet competition requirements necessary to advance to the Special Olympics Indiana Area Sectional Games in March. Teams that advance from Sectionals may earn the opportunity to compete at the Special Olympics Indiana State Basketball Tournament at the Indiana Pacers Athletic Center.
More than 100 local volunteers will support the event, but additional help is still needed. Individuals or organizations interested in volunteering or making donations are encouraged to contact Special Olympics of Marshall & Starke Counties at marshallstarkeso@gmail.com or 574-935-0513. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 1104, Plymouth, IN 46563.
