Shelbyville Central Schools board closed out its final meeting of 2024 with a heartfelt thank you to the two board members whose terms have expired.
Troy Merrick (photo, fifth from right) and Curt Johnson (photo, fifth from left) – the current and past board president, respectively – participated in their final meetings Wednesday at the school system’s administration building.
Superintendent Dr. Matt Vance thanked both men for their service and dedication to the school system and its students.
Dennis Hearne and Andrea Lee will join the board in their place. Their first school board meeting will be Jan. 13.
In other board business Wednesday:
- Accepted the Fiscal Year 2025 Indiana Secured School Safety grant for $81,000. The matching grant in 2024 was for $100,000. The reduction, according to Vance, is more schools applying for the grant which has decreased the amount for multiple schools around the state. The school board uses the grant to help pay for school resource officers within its schools.

- Approved an overnight field trip for the girls basketball team for a two-day tournament in Fountain City, Indiana, on Dec. 27-28. The Golden Bears (6-4 this season) will compete in the Wings and Rings Winter Classic hosted by Northeastern High School – an 8-team tournament that also includes Lafayette Central Catholic (8-2), Class A, No. 9 Tri (8-2), 2A No. 7 Brownstown Central (9-2), 3A, No. 14 Indianapolis Cathedral (5-6), Fort Wayne Wayne (8-3), Kokomo (8-3) and 2A No. 3 Northeastern (12-0).
- Approved an overnight field trip for Shelbyville High School and Shelbyville Middle School Future Farmers of America club to attend the Louisville Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Kentucky, on Feb. 13-14.
