Rochester Sidewalk Cost Share Program accepting applications starting September 1

Applications for the City of Rochester Sidewalk Cost Share Program will be available starting September 1. 

The Sidewalk Cost Share Program provides financial assistance to homeowners and small businesses to help repair, replace and install small sidewalks on or adjacent to their property in Rochester. The goal of the program is to improve walkability, safety, and ADA accessibility in town. 

Those eligible for the program include residential property owners, small business owners, nonprofits or community-based organizations. Tenants of rentals are also eligible candidates if there is written consent from the property owner. 

Chosen applicants will be able to use the funding for the removal and replacement of deteriorating sidewalks, installation of new sidewalks where gaps exist and leveling or grinding for trip hazards. The funds can not be used for driveways, private pathways, landscaping or aesthetic-only features. All projects must comply with City standards and codes. 

Portions of the project that include curb ramp installations and ADA accessibility will be addressed by the City. 

Funding is limited and the submission of an application does not guarantee approval for the program. A $50,000 fund makes the program possible, with $2,000 being given per property to those chosen. 

Application approval is required and the project must be reviewed by Street Department officials before work begins. 

Those receiving the grant must have the project completed by August 31, 2027. Applicants must provide project completion updates, as needed, to ensure a timely completion for the project. Final inspection is required for reimbursement. 

Deadline to apply for Sidewalk Cost Share Program is November 15. The Sidewalk/Tree Commission will review applications at its December meeting and the grand awards will be announced January 31.
