Rochester man facing felony charges after allegedly attacking man with hammer

A Rochester man was recently arrested after an incident in March where he was accused of hitting a man with a hammer during a fight. 

According to the probable cause affidavit, the arrest happened on March 20, after the Rochester Police Department responded to a report of a fight at 1212 College Ave. When officers arrived to the scene they found Gavin Jenkins, 26, of that address, still verbally fighting with another man at the scene. 

After questioning witnesses at the scene it was discovered Jenkins had allegedly struck a man with a hammer. A witness at the scene claimed he placed Jenkins in a headlock to prevent further damage during the altercation in attempt to keep him away from the victim, but told officers Jenkins eventually got away and hit the man with the weapon. Jenkins initially admitted to hitting the man with his fists, before later stating he didn't remember what he hit the man with. 

When speaking to the man, officers reported seeing a wound with blood near the victims’s neck. After the man was taken to the hospital it was discovered he sustained two deep lacerations to the lower right side of his neck close to his spine. The marks on the victim matched the claw sides of the hammer that Jenkins had allegedly used to hurt him. 

The victim told officers he had been trying to collect his belongings that were at Jenkins residence prior to being attacked and hit with the hammer. 

Jenkins was booked at the Fulton County Detention Center with charges of domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Level 5 Felony; and criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, a Level 6 Felony. Jenkin's bond was set at $10,000 Surety or $3,000 Cash. A no contact order was also issued for Jenkins against the victim.
