Last week during the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, Police Chief John Weir asked for approval to make a conditional offer of employment to the top candidate who applied for one of the two vacancies on the force.
The chief said they narrowed the field down to nine individuals and conducted interviews. They have narrowed the field down to the top three candidates.
At Monday’s meeting Chief Weir, the next step is the physical and psychological evaluations in Indianapolis which typically takes a month. The chief needed the Board of Public Works & Safety approval to make the conditional offer. Once the evaluations are received and approved then the city can get the officer on board with the swearing-in process.
Mayor Listenberger questioned the hiring process and said, “When they (police department) hire somebody do they come before the Board of Public Works and Safety to get approval, or have we given them approval when we approve the application process.”
City Attorney Jeff Houin said the chief has the authority to offer conditional employment without board approval. Board member Don Ecker did make the motion to Chief Weir’s request to make a conditional offer of employment and it was unanimously approved.
