Member of Howard County Sheriff's Office honored as ‘Traffic Safety All Pro’ for impaired driving enforcement

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) honored 90 members of Indiana’s public safety community during the annual Traffic Safety All Pros Awards Ceremony, recognizing their outstanding efforts to keep Hoosiers safe on the roads.

ICJI Executive Director Douglas Huntsinger presented the awards to law enforcement personnel who demonstrated exceptional performance in impaired driving enforcement and prevention in 2024, whether through a high number of impaired driving arrests or by showing leadership in prevention and education.

“Every impaired driver taken off the road is a life potentially saved. These officers work tirelessly to perform this mission,” Huntsinger said. “Their commitment to protecting Hoosiers is what makes this recognition so well deserved.”

Kody Detamore with the Howard County Sheriff’s Office was recognized as a Traffic Safety All Pro Team Recipient.

Now in its sixth year, the Traffic Safety All Pros Awards highlight officers who go above and beyond in the fight against impaired driving. From overtime patrols to sobriety checkpoints during holidays and peak travel periods, these honorees not only enforced Indiana’s traffic safety laws but also educated the public. Their collective efforts in 2024 resulted in more than 3,577 Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) arrests and contributed to Indiana recording its second consecutive year of declining traffic fatalities involving impaired drivers—an 18% decrease.

During the ceremony, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department patrolman Curtis Johnson received the MVP Award for making the most OWI arrests in 2024, a total of 147 arrests. Chris Daniels, Senior Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor at the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council, was named Coach of the Year in recognition of his work training officers to detect impaired drivers. ICJI also inducted six inaugural members into the Indiana Traffic Safety Hall of Fame for their career-long contributions to impaired driving prevention and program development benefiting Indiana’s law enforcement community.

Additional awards presented included:

• All Pro awards, presented to officers with 25 or more OWI arrests.
• All Star awards, presented to the top 25 officers for OWI arrests.
• Special Teams Award, presented to the department with the most blood draws conducted through Indiana’s phlebotomy program, which trains law enforcement to collect blood samples in impaired driving cases.
