Shelby County Public Library is ready to begin extensive renovation and rejuvenation.
Work is slated to begin on March 4 or 5. The project will be financed by a $2 million General Obligation Bond, which was approved by the Shelby County Council in July 2025.
Items included in the multifaceted project include:
HVAC work in Carnegie East Wing (CEW)
Modernization of both elevators – each one will be shut down for five weeks when they are being done
Fire alarm installation and upgrade in old Carnegie/1960s/1990s addition
New or refurbished windows in 1960s addition
New insulated tiles and potentially other HVAC tweaks
Room D renovation into Acquisitions Department
Security camera additions
Replacement of back book drops
People counter
Exterior stone/masonry restoration (tuckpointing of limestone, chimney)
Water line/sewage line work – this will include some sidewalk demolition
Replacement of gate at CEW Entrance B
Landscaping
Fountain repairs/paint
New shelving and furniture, as budget allows
The current planned completion date for all work (excluding adult services shelving) is June 24.
