Lawrenceville sewage plant visited by U.S. EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency made a surprise inspection of the Lawrenceville sewage treatment plant in March. That according to Mayor David Courtney who briefed the city council on the visit Thursday night.

The mayor told GIANT-FM News that they found 29 items of concern that need to be rectified and the city is being proactive in addressing them. He added that many of the infractions were already being taken care of by E.J. Water after the firm was hired to manage the facility. The city had previously been cited by the Illinois E.P.A. in regard to the operation of the plant.

The council did approve adoption of an amended ordinance to allow the use of side-by-side off-road vehicles on city street and be governed much the same as golf carts.

They held first reading of the annual appropriation ordinance which governs city spending. The ordinance amount was approximately $6.94 million, a little over a 1% increase from the previous year. Public hearings will be scheduled on the legislation prior to its formal approval by the council.
