It's back to square one for the Lawrenceville City Council in its efforts to fill the vacant Ward 1 seat.
They met Thursday night in regular session at City Hall and took the first official step in filling the spot vacated by the resignation of Kelly Lewis in December. Her resignation was officially accepted. While Lewis verbally announced she was stepping down at the December meeting, the action was not approved at that time, as legally required.
With the acceptance, the search now resumes for candidates to replace Lewis. The council met in a special session last week where Mayor David Courtney recommended Boyd Shelton to fill the seat, but it was discovered he was ineligible by law due to his previous background. A more stringent vetting process will be used to screen candidates going forward.
The council has a 60-day period from now to find a qualified candidate to serve. Previous candidates will be re-examined and new candidates interested can contact Lawrenceville City Hall.
