The Latest U.S. Drought Monitor map was released late last week, and it indicates Lawrence and surrounding counties in southeastern Illinois are experiencing moderate drought.
However, areas in southwestern Illinois are now listed as in severe drought. Most of southern Illinois is shown in moderate drought and the southern two-thirds of the state are classified as abnormally dry due to the lack of substantial rain for almost two weeks.
But things are anticipated to improve beginning this first week in November. Heavy periods of rain are forecast, and the wet weather is expected to continue into next week. Temperature levels are also expected to be closer to normal levels.
The extended six to ten and eight to fourteen day outlooks also call for additional precipitation, but above normal temperatures running through the end of November.
