The leaves are changing, the nights are getting longer, and deer are on the move across southeastern Illinois and other areas of the state.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) are reminding Lawrence County and other motorists to be alert for deer on the roads. This is peak mating season for the animals and with more deer on the move, the chances of a collision increase.
If traveling, remember deer can appear on the road suddenly and most likely in groups. If you come upon a deer or deer in your vehicle, the safest choice is to stay in your lane of traffic, slow down slowly and brake firmly and avoid swerving in traffic to avoid them.
