Funeral services Thursday for former North Judson coach, teacher Kevin Brown

Kevin E. Brown, 72, of North Judson, passed away on July 18, at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac, Indiana, after a lengthy battle with Lewy Body dementia.

He was born on August 30, 1953 in Knox, Indiana to Calvin and Charlotte (Hankey) Brown of North Judson. He graduated from North Judson High School in 1971 and attended Ball State University where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in education.

Kevin started his teaching and coaching career at North Judson middle school in 1976 where he taught Physical Education and Health. He coached football, basketball, and one year of baseball. Kevin coached football for 16 seasons and was proud to be a part of three state runner-up teams.

Kevin was the head girls basketball coach at North Judson from 1982 – 2003 where he lead teams to a 348 – 105 record in 21 seasons. Included in that time were 12 conference titles, 11 sectional titles, and five regional titles while reaching the Class 2A Final Four twice. He received numerous state and district Coach of the Year awards from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and was a 12-time Conference Coach of the Year winner. He was honored to be an assistance coach of the 2000 Indiana All-Star team as well as a 1998 Indiana Junior All-Stars coach. One of his most honored achievements was being inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

On August 16, 1975, he married Mary Mohr in Winamac. They were blessed with three daughters, Melissa (Gabe) Hamelman of Layette, Indiana, Michelle (Chris) Cahoe of Yorktown, Indiana, and Megan (Chris) Hittle of North Judson. Kevin and Mary were blessed with six treasured grandchildren: Haley, Caleb, Luke, Garrett, Calvin, and Landon along with great granddaughter McKinley and another great grandchild on the way.

Kevin was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he served on several church boards. He is survived by one brother, Craig (Debbie) Brown of Mishawaka, Indiana, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Mark Brown, and niece Kelly Brown.

Memorials may be made to the NJ-SP Girls Basketball Program or to St Peters Lutheran Church/School.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. CT Thursday, July 23, at St Peters Lutheran Church followed by Funeral Services at 1 p.m. CT at the church.

Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, North Judson.
