Fire destroys historic southwestern Indiana church

Multiple firefighting crews spent hours battling a major church fire in Princeton, Indiana Monday.

The Gibson County Sheriff's Department reported that emergency dispatch received a call around 2 p.m. CT regarding a fire on North West Street at the historic Princeton Church.

Firemen arrived to find flames coming through a partially collapsed roof and the stained-glass windows in the structure were blown out by the intense heat.

They remained on scene for seven hours before bringing the fire under control and also returned overnight to guard against hot spots rekindling.

The church was built in 1896 and was still in use at the time of the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.
