Commissioners approve intersection study with RQAW pending attorney review of agreement

The Marshall County Commissioners approved an on-call agreement with RQAW for improvements at South Michigan Road and 17^th Road, also known as Dewy Street, on the south side of Argos, pending the County Attorney’s review. 

Highway Superintendent Jason Peters said the agreement calls for $20,000 for the intersection study, and there is an additional $30,000 that can be used by any county department as directed by the commissioners for a total of $50,000.

Commissioner President Stan Klotz asked where the funds would come from, and Superintendent Peters said he would use the Cum Bridge fund for the $20,000 intersection study. He went on to say the remaining $30,000 would be provided by the department that uses the funds.

Commissioner Jesse Bohannon commented that INDOT may decide to close the intersection of U.S. 31 and 17^th/Dewey Street with the U.S. 31 limited-access highway project, which is not even scheduled yet, although the improvements at U.S. 31 and State Road 10 may have an impact on the highway intersection, too.  

Semi traffic for Sequel Wire at the intersection just south of the railroad is experiencing trouble making the turn. Peters said he’s seen semis trying to make the turn end up in the grass and off the edge of the roadway.  He said the intersection is very tight and very narrow.  Peters said if INDOT closes off access at U.S. 31, there will be more semi traffic using the intersection.   

Commissioner Stan Klotz said the pneumatic tankers are having trouble because they are tearing off their unloading equipment due to the intersection.

The commissioners unanimously approved the $20,000 for the intersection study with RQAW pending County Attorney Sean Surrisi’s review of the agreement.
