The Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals heard a request for a variance of development standard from Beth Cashen of Cashen Creek Florist at 627 South Michigan Street last week.
Cashen created a gravel parking lot north of the building for the convenience and safety of their customers with the approval of the city and was informed that the lot would need to be paved within a year. The year has passed, and the lot is still gravel.
During the meeting Cashen said it was cost prohibitive to pave the lot, thus her request for the variance to not pave the small lot.
During a discussion with the BZA it was noted that the handicap space provided in the lot doesn’t meet ADA standards. Cashen was told the surface must be paved or concrete pad for stable footing.
During the public hearing an employee with the business noted that the property is in a historic neighborhood. She said getting a quote for such a small project hasn’t been easy. She also said placing plants for sale on black top isn’t good for them.
The Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals gave Cashen an extension of 1-year to become compliant with the city standards. The extension also requires Cashen to create a handicap parking space that meets ADA requirements as soon as possible.
The motion was approved by a 4 to 1 vote with BZA president Art Jacobs voting against due to the ADA violation.
